Can K2/Spice be detected in drug tests?

Do they test for K2 or Spice and can it be detected in urine tests? Blood tests?

K2 and Spice are synthetic marijuana brand names. Other names used for synthetic marijuana include synthetic cannabis, synthetic pot, synthetic weed, fake pot, and herbal incense.

Synthetic Drugs

"Spice", and other Synthetic marijuana (synthetic cannabis), is created by spraying natural herbs with synthetic, psychoactive chemicals.

Designer Drugs

"Spice" and "K2" are a designer drugs, created with the intent of mimicking the effects of illegal drugs, like marijuana. It remains a legal substance in some locations by labeling itself "not for human consumption".

Synthetic Marijuana

Though synthetic marijuana, like Spice and K2, is called "marijuana", it does not come from the cannabis plant and does not contain THC, like natural marijuana buds do.

Drug Testing

Many designer drugs attempt to create substances that are not detectable by drug tests of any kind: blood, urine, or hair.

"Spice" and "K2" are also commonly known as:

  • K3
  • Bliss
  • Black Mamba
  • Bombay Blue
  • Cloud Nine
  • Fake Weed
  • Genie
  • Zohai

are usually just a mix of herbs and spices sprayed with either JWH-018 pentanoic acid or JWH-073 butanoic acid. Both of those substances are detectable in urine and blood.

Because the K2/Spice craze is relatively recent and fast-growing, not many drug test administrators test specifically for these chemicals. There are test kits available, but they are not approved for marketing to the public (test kits have to receive FDA approval before they can be sold to the public). There is at least one company providing urine sample test kits for JWH-018 pentanoic acid or JWH-073 butanoic acid to law enforcement and other authorized agencies (law enforcement agencies, prisons, sheriffs’ departments, drug courts) but are not approved to be sold to hospitals, pain clinics, rehab centers, nor employment agencies.
