Is marijuana legal in California?

I'm trying to understand state-by-state marijuana legislation in the US. What is the legal status of marijuana use and possession in California?

Marijuana, aka cannabis, pot, weed, dope, MJ (Mary-Jane), is classified as a Schedule I Controlled Substance by the Controlled Substances Act of 1970. Some states have decriminalized marijuana and some have adopted medical marijuana programs, allowing the possession of a given amount of usable marijuana (1-24 ounces) and marijuana plants (7-15 plants), which varies from state-to-state. Marijuana is not physically addictive, though some people may need rehab to help quit. Detox from marijuana is rarely seen, unless the user has other drug dependencies or is otherwise suffering from withdrawal.

Controversial debate surrounds the possible removal of marijuana (cannabis) from Schedule I of the Controlled Substances Act as more US states begin to adopt their own medicinal marijuana programs.

You can get your Medical Marijuana Card, or "green card", in California pretty easily, and be able to purchase and possess a certain amount of pot distributed by licensed dispensaries. Of course, it is supposed to be for a legitimate reason, like pain, insomnia, or loss of appetite.
