How do you know if you need formal detox to quit drugs or alcohol?

Does everyone need detox to have a successful rehabilitation? How do recovering addicts know when detox is for them?

Detox is the process of cleansing the body from toxic substances including, but not limited to, drugs and alcohol. Professional or medical Detox (is that "formal" detox?) helps the body ease into equilibrium after long-term substance abuse. Professional drug or alcohol detox is supervised by physicians and addiction counselors. Detox is required by most drug and alcohol treatment programs, to ensure that the person is substance-free and able to participate.

Many alcoholics need professional help to successfully manage alcohol withdrawal during detox.

Drug Rehab

Some drug rehab programs include a detox regiment.

Drug Detox

Drug detox is a process of supervised quitting. Withdrawal symptoms are managed for safety and sometimes comfort.

Addiction Treatment

Detox is a common first step for addiction treatment.

Alcohol Detox

Alcohol detox is a supervised process. If someone wants to get sober but cannot due to alcohol withdrawal symptoms, alcohol detox is a solution.

If you have tried to stop using alcohol and/or other drugs in the past, and were unable to do so because of discomfort or physical problems when the drugs were leaving your system, then you will need some kind of detox. It is recommended to undergo medical detox under the supervision of trained personnel, because some kinds of withdrawal are life-threatening (alcohol, Xanax, Ativan, and Valium, for example), and some kinds are simply so uncomfortable that a person’s chances of getting through them without help are poor.

Going through treatment without detox would only make things more difficult. Detox helps, and recovering addicts need all the help they can get.
