How long does drug detox take?

How long does it take the body to detox from drugs? Why do some people spend far more time in detox than others?

Detox is the process of cleansing the body from toxic substances including, but not limited to, drugs and alcohol. Detox helps the body ease into equilibrium after long-term substance abuse. The human body is affected differently depending on the substance abused, so the length of detox and the regiment itself will vary with substances as well.

Drug Addiction

Many people need drug detox to be able to begin managing their drug addictions in a healthy and effective way.

Drug Detox

The duration of drug detox varies from program to program.

Drug Rehab

Drug rehab programs can include a detox regiment or recommend, even require, detox before beginning rehab.

Drug Treatment

Drug detox is an effective beginning to drug treatment.

Detox takes about a week for oxycontin and roxy, or maybe up to ten days depending on how high a dose you're up to and how much you depend on the stuff to get you moving in the morning. If you're hopelessly useless without a serious dose or two, you should expect it to take longer to detox. You're not done with detox until you're clean and able to get up, face the day, finish a full day.

Each detox protocol is individual to the patient. Length depends on the drug, the typical dosage, and duration of addiction.

Detox from opiates (heroin, oxycodone, roxy etc.) takes longer than alcohol detox, usually lasting about seven days. Most antidepressant drugs, such as barbiturates (Amytal, Nembutal, etc.), require about the same amount of time.

Methadone and benzodiazepines require a longer stay in drug detox, typically 10-14 days depending on the dose and the length of time the drugs have been used.

Withdrawal from Benzodiazepines such as Ativan and Xanax can be life-threatening so detox from benzodizepeines is done in a medical setting (detox clinic) with doctor supervision. Medication is often used to reduce the risk of seizures, dangerous increases in blood pressure, hallucinations (DT’s), and to maintain the patients’ comfort throughout the detox process.
