An intervention happens when drug addicts or alcoholics can't seem to grasp the significance of their addictions, so a group of friends and family members confront the addict to bring the issue to light. It's a bum rush, a trap, really; the addict is caught off-guard and simply must confront the problem right then and there. Close friends and family members share stories of how this person's addiction has affected them and how they are there to support his or her recovery. It's a bit of shock therapy, or forced treatment, if you will. The event is meant to have a profound impact on the addict, as he or she realizes that hiding is no longer an option. In many cases, a professional drug or alcohol counselor is there to mediate the process. In some cases, professional drug counselors are there with treatment center staff (almost like bodyguards) to take the addict to a treatment facility immediately after the intervention (often whether they like it or not). Sounds pretty rough, eh? Well, for some, this may be the only option.
