Asking how "common" suicide is during withdrawal is hard to define. The relative number would be very small compared to those who do not kill themselves. However, yes, people have committed suicide during withdrawal, and some of them were not suicidal before. But it's not like people either end up finding a fix to get them out of the withdrawal or they kill themselves, it's way more complex than that. Thoughts of suicide and suicide itself can be sparked by a plethora of sources and other triggers; withdrawal might just be one more thing that pushes them toward the edge.
