Is medicinal marijuana legal?

I know that you can get your medical marijuana card, or "green card", from doctors in many states and buy from dispensaries, but is it actually legal? If so, then why do I read about cardholders and dispensaries still getting busted around the country?

The legalization of Marijuana is a hot topic in the US government, as various states begin to adopt their own medical marijuana programs. Though federal law defines all activity surrounding Marijuana as illegal, some states allow their residents to have up to a given amount of "usable" Marijuana and personal Marijuana plants. Today, 16 states have medical marijuana programs, including California, Washington, New Jersey, DC, and most recently Delaware.

Medicinal marijuana is legal in some states (if a patient has a green card), but it is still illegal under federal law.
