Drug Addiction

People can become addicted to some drugs as early as the first or second time they use, depending on the substance.

Drug Abuse

Chronic drug abuse can create dependencies that lead to serious addiction.

Though alcohol is legal, it is a controlled substance and is addictive.

Alcohol Addiction

A person's drinking problem can easily become an addiction. There is a fine line between moderate and problem drinking habits.

Alcohol Abuse

Alcohol abuse can create dependencies that lead to serious addiction.

This question really cannot be answered with one blanket statement. It is generally accepted that addiction is both a physical and a psychological condition. Every person is different and because of this, their reactions to addictive substances will be different. There are substances like meth that usually result in addiction very quickly. In this case yes, one can become addicted on first use. However, there are other substances that may take repeated use, repeated experience with the sensations, to end up in addiction. The deciding factors are usually a physical propensity toward addiction and a psychological state of mind that leaves the user more open to addiction.
