Are there other ways to treat chronic pain, besides pain pills?

With all of the drug addiction and especially painkiller addictions, should be (society) we looking at other ways of treating pain? Seems like all we hear is pills pills pills.

Prescription pain medication, most commonly distributed in pill form (OxyContin, Percocet, Vicodin, etc.), relieves moderate to severe pain. These drugs (oxycodone, hydrocodone) are derivatives of opium, and like heroin, are highly addictive and cause a sense of euphoria when taken in large doses. The rate of pain pill addiction has increased dramatically over the last decade, as access to these drugs become easier to the average citizen. Some people truly need some sort of pain management, but effective options are limited.

This was posted to a discussion about the problems with addictive prescription pain killers:

"Treating chronic pain with narcotics does not work. Patients become habituated to the medication and require higher and higher doses to get the same amount of pain relief and to avoid withdrawal symptoms. This sets the stage for addiction and medical complications including death. Prescription painkillers cause more trips to emergency rooms and more overdose deaths than illegal drugs."
