What is Morphine?

Doesn't morphine come from the same plant as heroin? Are they not basically the same drug?

Morphine ((5?,6?)-7,8-didehydro- 4,5-epoxy-17-methylmorphinan-3,6-diol) is also known by brand names and generic labels such as morphine, Kadian, morphine sulfate, Avinza, Duramorph, DepoDur, and Astramorph.

While Morphine is natural, there are many synthetic opioids that have effects similar to Morphine (such as analgesic opioids).

Morphine Addiction

Morphine can be addicting; opiates (and synthetic opioids) are among the most addictive drugs available, and are regulated by both the FDA and the DEA.

Morphine Treatment

Morphine addiction treatment involved drug detox (for physical opiate/opioid dependency), drug rehab (usually in-residence or inpatient drug rehab, started only after successful detox is completed), and continuing outpatient recovery support (such as outpatient therapy or 12 step meetings).
