12 Step programs (including Alcoholics Anonymous-AA and Narcotics Anonymous- NA) often close their meetings with the Serenity Prayer. Commenting on the immediate acceptance of the Serenity Prayer by Fellowship members when it was first introduced, Bill W., the Founder of AA, said "Never had we seen so much A.A. in so few words".

Addiction Treatment

The Serenity Prayer is recited at 12 step meetings, which are the most popular format for addiction and substance abuse recovery support.

Drug Treatment

Drug treatment, like alcoholism treatment, usually includes participation in 12 step Fellowship meetings, where the Serenity Prayer is a staple.

Alcohol Treatment

Alcohol treatment (treatment for alcoholism and alcohol abuse) commonly includes participation in 12 step (AA) meetings.

The official Serenity Prayer is:

God grant us the serenity to accept the things we cannot change, courage to change the things we can, and wisdom to know the difference.

A longer and more religious version:

God grant me the SERENITY to accept the things I cannot change, COURAGE to change the things I can, and WISDOM to know the difference.

Living one day at a time, enjoying one moment at a time, accepting hardships as the pathway to peace

taking, as He did, this sinful world as it is, not as I would have it

Trusting that He will make all things right if I surrender to His Will, that I may be reasonably happy in this life and supremely happy with Him forever in the next. Amen
