In alcoholic ketoacidosis - alcohol causes dehydration by forceing water out of the blood cells. This blocks the first step in the bodies production of glucose. The body then starts using your body fat for energy, which results in Ketone Body formation. Ketone Bodies are a by product of the body burning body fat for energy which is called Ketoacidosis. Ketoacidosis can be smelled on a person's breath. This smell is often described as smelling like nail polish remover or alcohol. Diabetics can also have this condition but their breath tends to smell fruity.
