What is Oxycontin?

My mother is taking Oxycontin for her neck pain. She slipped on the ice last winter and hurt her neck and back. The sidewalks here in New Jersey get really icy in the winter. He doctor prescribed pain medication (I think it was Percoset or codeine?) but it didn't work very well, and she ended up taking Oxycontin for her pain.

Now she's taking several oxycontin 20mg tablets every day, and I'm not sure if she's hooked on them. She acts funny about her pain pills whenever we want to go outside of the house. Sometimes I swear it's like a little girl and her comfort blanky or stuffed animal -- she runs and has to get her pills and have them safely in her purse or we can't go anywhere. That's why I'm a little concerned. Is oxycontin addictive? It says "oxycodone" on the bottle, which I read is a very common prescription pain medicine. I'm wondering what oxycontin is exactly, and does she really need it. Her doctor says if she says she needs them, she does.

If you are concerned about drug addiction, you should talk to a drug addiction counselor. There are great resources available for that, and you will learn about addiction even if you aren't taking drugs yourself.

Prescription Drugs

Oxycontin is available by prescription only.

Oxycontin is a commonly prescribed opiate used for pain management.

Oxycontin is a brand name painkiller.

Oxycontin is a powerful pain management medication produced by Purdue Pharma.

OxyContin is a brand name for the narcotic oxycodone hydrochloride, an oral painkiller manufactured by Purdue Pharma. Like Percocet and Percodan, OxyContin is an opioid analgesic that is legally available in the United States by prescription. Typically, OxyContin is prescribed in order to relieve severe pain in patients suffering from arthritis, bursitis, cancer, chronic pain, injuries, neuralgia or surgery recovery.

OxyContin is a time-released drug that is intended to alleviate pain symptoms over long periods of time. Unlike Percocet or Percodan, which act over 4 to 6 hour periods, Oxycontin pills act for up to 12 hours when taken orally. However, abusers of OxyContin often crush it and snort it, or make it into a liquid solution and inject it. This amplifies the effects of OxyContin, eliminating the time-release barrier and causing users to experience a powerful rush when the full dose of OxyContin's active ingredient, oxycodone hydrochloride, is released into their bloodstreams.

When used incorrectly, OxyContin may be highly addictive. The pharmacological effects of OxyContin can mimic those of heroin, making it appealing to both heroin users and other populations . According to the 2010 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, more than 6 million Americans have abused OxyContin in their lifetimes.

Oxycontin is the same as oxycottin and oxycotton.. those are mis-spellings (street names). Also roxycodone, roxycet, and roxy are sometimes really just names for oxydcodone (or hydrocodone). Not sure of the difference between oxycodone and hydrocodone though.
